The Forum for Development and Accountable Governance (FDAG) has raised serious concerns about a video circulating widely, showing the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr George Akuffo Dampare, directing traffic during President Mahama’s inauguration.

According to the group, this act, rather than being an act of humility, appears to be a calculated effort to win public favour and campaign for reappointment.

They argue that the IGP’s focus on such theatrics undermines the critical responsibilities of his office.

FDAG criticised the IGP for neglecting his strategic duties as the leader of the Ghana Police Service. As the head of the organisation, the IGP is expected to ensure proper planning, strategic oversight, and effective coordination, especially during significant events like the presidential inauguration.

The chaotic and overcrowded nature of the event was highlighted as evidence of poor preparation and leadership. The forum stated that such lapses compromise public safety and reflect a worrying failure of leadership.

The organisation has called on the IGP to redirect his attention to addressing pressing national issues, particularly in the area of security. FDAG emphasised the need for updates on key investigations, including incidents such as the killings during the 2024 elections, the Adabraka robbery, post-election violence, and the recent Kantamanto market fire.

They underscored the importance of a police service committed to substantive actions rather than superficial displays aimed at personal gain.

In its statement, FDAG also highlighted systemic challenges within the Ghana Police Service, such as unresolved promotion issues and the neglect of officers’ welfare, which have created a demoralised and ineffective force.

The forum concluded by asserting the need for a change in leadership.

They called for the appointment of a competent and experienced leader who can restore order, integrity, and public confidence in the police service, moving beyond populist stunts to address the real challenges facing the institution.
