In his inaugural address on Tuesday, 7th January, President John Dramani Mahama extended warm words of respect and camaraderie to his predecessor, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
Reflecting on their shared political journey, President Mahama acknowledged their unique historical relationship, which spanned decades and was marked by mutual respect despite their political differences.
"You have, without exception, been a worthy opponent," he told the former President, drawing applause from the gathered audience.
"Today’s exercise between the outgoing president, His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, and I feels a bit like déjà vu," he remarked.
"Eight years ago to this day, January 7, 2017, we shared this same space and performed this same transitional exercise." Recalling their roles during the first transition, Mahama highlighted how they both understood the responsibility they bore as servants of the Ghanaian people.
He went on to reflect on their shared political origins, noting their entry into Parliament in 1996 and the unique bond forged over decades of public service. "Somehow, it seems fitting that it is with Nana Akufo-Addo that I twice shared this stage and this unique historical distinction," Mahama observed.
"While we belong to opposing political parties, we shared a sense of mutual respect." He also spoke fondly of the personal warmth they maintained over the years, recalling how Akufo-Addo persistently called him “Johnnie” with a firm handshake and a smile.
Concluding his tribute, President Mahama expressed gratitude for their shared journey. "Nana, as this will be our final meeting under these circumstances, and as I look back on the journey we have travelled together... I have to say that you have without exception been a worthy opponent," he said.
