The Minority Leader of the 8th Parliament, Ato Forson, says future generations of Ghanaians will judge the leadership of the outgoing New Patriotic Party (NPP) for their numerous failures during their time in office.
He said that posterity would vindicate the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for having warned the NPP government about the dangers of excessive borrowing, a warning which was ignored.
“I believe that posterity will surely vindicate our warnings regarding the reckless borrowing and economic mismanagement under the Akufo-Addo and Alhaji Bawumia administration,” he said.
The lawmaker also highlighted that records available to the chamber show that certain individuals within the NPP have profited from substantial sums, including transaction advisory fees, while the nation continues to grapple with burdensome public debt.
“Some individuals in government benefited to the tune of $159.3 million in transaction advisory fees, while the country was saddled with an unsustainable public debt,” he disclosed during his speech at the dissolution of the 8th Parliament on Monday, January 6, at Parliament House.
Mr Ato Forson further noted that the NDC had raised concerns about the management of the Bank of Ghana, which led to significant negative equity losses for the nation.
He also added that “As a result, the Bank of Ghana became policy insolvent by the end of 2023,” and alleged that the bank had also printed illegal money to finance government expenditure, contributing to the country’s inflation crisis.
The Minority Leader went on to accuse the outgoing government of engaging in fraudulent and corrupt activities across various sectors of the economy, including agriculture, particularly the cocoa industry, and infrastructure development, among others.
