Black Stars all-time top scorer Asamoah Gyan has called out his former teammates for failing to step up for the penalty incident in Ghana’s 2010 World Cup quarterfinal game.
The 39-year-old slammed the team for not coming to the aid of the team at a crucial time when Ghana needed them most.
The Black Stars were awarded a penalty in the denying embers of the game against Uruguay after a Luis Suarez handball.
Gyan stepped up to take the penalty but missed before Ghana was knocked out on penalties with the incident being one of the lows in the former Ghana captain’s career.
In an Instagram Live rant on Thursday, January 2, Gyan revealed he had no request from any of his mates to take the penalty.
“When the penalty miss happened, I was abused and called names because some people said I should have left it for someone else. Why didn’t they step up to take it? They were afraid. Cowards. I will say it—they are cowards,” he declared.
“How could anyone suggest that I missed the penalty against Uruguay on purpose? For what reason exactly? I was Ghana’s first-choice penalty taker. Why would you go behind my back and talk about me missing the penalty? The fans can say what they want, but sometimes we need to educate them. Yet, nobody spoke up for me.”
Gyan hanged up his boots in 2023 after a remarkable career, which included becoming the most prolific African player in World Cup history with six goals. His tally of 51 goals leaves him as Ghana’s all time top scorer.
