The Judicial Service Staff Association of Ghana (JUSAG) has called for expedited approval of its proposed salary reviews for its members.
According to the association, the Judicial Council has completed its recommendations for a review of salaries and related allowances, and has submitted them to President Akufo-Addo for approval, as mandated by Article 149 of the Constitution.
In a statement on Tuesday, December 31, 2024, JUSAG highlighted a recent directive by the President to Parliament to consider the budgets of the Audit Service, Parliamentary Service, and the Judicial Service.
The association described this as a positive development, noting that the budgets include provisions for compensation, such as salaries and allowances.
However, JUSAG expressed concern over delays in the approval process. The association disclosed that its National Executive Council (NEC) has petitioned Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo to expedite the process.
"As of yesterday [December 30], the official feedback on the matter is that the recommendation of the Judicial Council is receiving the highest attention of His Excellency, the President of Ghana. The reports have been referred to the Minister of Finance for an update on the status of the request," part of the statement read.
Despite this assurance, JUSAG indicated it has devised a series of industrial action strategies to address potential undue delays in the approval and implementation of the new salary structure.
"We are keenly monitoring the progress. We have also mapped out a number of industrial
action tools that could be activated should the government unduly delay the approval and implementation," the association cautioned.
