A new Chief Imam has been appointed for the Ashanti Region following the passing of Sheikh Abdul Mumin Haroun, the former Chief Imam.
Sheikh Haroun passed away on the night of December 17, 2024, at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi, after serving the Muslim community for 13 years.
The newly appointed Chief Imam, Sheikh Abdul Rahman Zakaria Al Shoukry, assumes the role immediately, after receiving approval from the Council of Ulama, the Council of Zongo Chiefs, and other elders, led by the Ghana Muslim Mission.
This appointment follows a similar process, as the Ghana Muslim Mission had previously appointed him as Deputy Chief Imam 13 years ago.
As Chief Imam, Sheikh Al Shoukry's responsibilities extend beyond leading prayers and providing spiritual guidance.
He is also tasked with uniting the Muslim community in the region, bringing together individuals from diverse backgrounds and fostering a strong sense of unity and cooperation.
While reading the appointment letter in the presence of all stakeholders, the National Chairman of the Ghana Muslim Mission, Sheikh Dr Amin Bonsu, urged the new regional Chief Imam to provide leadership that transcends tribal, sectarian, and political divisions, promoting inclusivity and respect for all Muslims.
“You will work to advance the interests of the Ghana Muslim Mission, uphold its values and objectives, contribute to the growth and development of Islam, and enhance the welfare of Muslims,” Sheikh Dr Amin said.
The Chief Imam is also expected to uphold the highest standards of integrity, impartiality, and fairness in his leadership.
“We are confident that your experience, wisdom, and leadership abilities make you the ideal candidate for this position. We look forward to working with you to promote the interests of the Ghana Muslim Mission and the Muslim community in Ghana,” he added.
Sheikh Al Shoukry accepted the appointment with gratitude and called on the Muslim community to support his leadership.
The ceremony, held at the Islamic Senior High School, was attended by several dignitaries, including Alhaji Karim Grusah, among others.
