Parliament's Committee on Works and Housing toured the Saglemi Housing project site following last Tuesday's fire outbreak, which burnt down two containers serving as storage facilities.
This follows the sudden fire that gutted five 40-foot containers used as offices for the project on Tuesday, December 24.
Committee Chairman Vincent Oppong Asamoah expressed concerns about the current state of the project during his visit to the Saglemi Housing Project on Tuesday, December 31, following the inferno.
“We decided to come to the site itself so that we can also do some inspection to know if there are additional defects on the structure,” he said.
He noted that the government has engaged a new contractor to complete the project.
“We’ve also heard that there is a new contractor, a new investor that the government has procured to complete this structure, even though we don’t know the terms of the contract. But it is good we are here, at least to be abreast of the situation on the ground at the moment,” he revealed.
Mr Asamoah also shared his frustration over abandoned building materials left at the mercy of the weather, condemning the act and saying that all those materials were purchased with a significant amount of money, and therefore needed to be protected to ensure the completion of the project.
“Those materials have been here for over ten years, and leaving them to the vagaries of the weather, you can imagine what has happened to them. The question we keep on asking ourselves is, if we had used our own money, our pocket money to procure these, would they allow it to go to waste the way we have done it? You know we have spent over 200 million dollars to procure all these items,” he said.
