The Cocoa Farmers Award Winners Association has said that they are confident President-elect, John Dramani Mahama will revive the cocoa sector and improve the livelihood of the crop farmers.
The President of the association, Charles Gyamfi said that President Mahama’s status as a farmer and his experience in managing the country make him the best person to tackle the sector's challenges with policies that will reverse its declining fortunes.
In a statement congratulating the former president and the National Democratic Congress for winning the December 7 elections, Mr Gyamfi said cocoa farmers and persons in the agricultural sector, in general, were inspired by the NDC’s forward-looking policies and hopeful that President Mahama and the party will fulfill them to the benefit of the sector and the country at large.
"We are particularly encouraged by your commitment to modernizing farming techniques while preserving traditional knowledge."
"Your pledge to strengthen the cocoa pricing mechanism to ensure fair returns for our hardworking farmers is also heartwarming," he said.
"At this crucial time when global cocoa prices are reaching historic highs, we believe your leadership will be instrumental in ensuring Ghana maximizes these opportunities for our farmers' benefit," the president of the association said.
Mr Gyamfi said the association was particularly eager to partner with the incoming government on sustainable farming practices to preserve the country's cocoa heritage for future generations while meeting growing global demand for environmentally responsible production.
For a start, he said the group was ready to engage with the transition team to share its detailed proposals for strengthening Ghana's cocoa sector.
"We are prepared to participate in any agricultural policy discussions as you form your government," Mr Gyamfi said.
He also congratulated President Mahama and the NDC for conducting a peaceful and spirited campaign, leading to their historic win in both the presidential and parliamentary elections.
