The redevelopment project at the Quarm LMI site remains unaffected despite a fire that broke out on the premises, the Works and Housing Minister Kojo Oppong Nkrumah has confirmed.

During a visit to the site on Wednesday, December 25, he assured the public that the project is on track and that earlier reports of significant damage or loss of documents were untrue.

According to him, the Managing Director of Quarm LMI, Kofi Ofori briefed him about the fire development noting that the fire, which occurred at the campsite, was limited to two sheds and two containers.

“The Managing Director of Quarm LMI Kofi Ofori and his team conducted us around the site. They've started the redevelopment, clearing the site, setting up for the redevelopment…The buildings are all here.

"They've not been affected by any incident. He explained to us that what happened was that at the campsite, they had two sheds that caught fire yesterday and two containers.

“And even for the containers, he explains that they are containers that contain some old items that were used for the initial construction.

"I also asked him about these reports that there was an office with documents. He says it's not true. There's no office with any such documents,” he clarified.

Addressing speculation that the fire was deliberate, Mr Oppong Nkrumah dismissed the claims, noting that there was no evidence to suggest foul play.

“Having been here and seen the situation firsthand, I can confirm that there is no basis for such allegations,” he stated.

Mr Oppong Nkrumah commended the Fire Service for their swift response in managing the fire and stated that a detailed report from the service would shed more light on the cause of the incident.

When asked about concerns of safety on-site, Mr Oppong Nkrumah urged the contractors to adhere strictly to the building codes and safety standards.

“They must ensure nothing untoward happens as they proceed with the project,” he said.

He also stressed the importance of meeting the project’s timeline, which is set at a little over 400 days, including the commercial and residential property components.

The Works and Housing Minister urged them to remain diligent and ensure that the project progresses according to plan, providing much-needed infrastructure to the area.
