We thank God for the 2024 general elections – Akufo-Addo

The outgoing President of the Republic, Nana Akufo-Addo, has once again expressed his gratitude to God for guiding the nation through another general election.

“We give thanks to the Almighty God for the peaceful nature of the process, which allowed the sovereign will of the Ghanaian people to be manifest,” he said.

Speaking at the bicentennial anniversary of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana in Accra on Sunday, December 22, the president, who will hand over the presidency to the president-elect, John Mahama, on January 7, 2025, stated that the election had once again demonstrated that Ghana is the beacon of democracy.

“The exercise has once again reaffirmed Ghana’s enviable standing as the beacon of democracy on the African continent,” he said.

During his address, he reiterated his congratulatory message to Mr Mahama and commended the Electoral Commission (EC) for its “diligent and transparent” work before, during, and after the election.

He also praised the various security agencies for their roles in ensuring the election’s success. However, he urged the leadership of the police to adopt more strategic approaches to swiftly respond to election-related violence.

There was post-election violence in certain parts of the country. Although there were reports of vandalism, looting, and deaths, the situation did not escalate further.

Nana Akufo-Addo called on the public to remain “resolute in our commitment to safeguarding the peace, stability, and democratic values we have worked so hard to establish.”
