The parliamentary election collation for Tema Central has come to a halt after the Returning Officer declined to proceed in the absence of representatives from all political parties.
The official, who only introduced himself as Mr Brobbey, cited fears for his personal safety as a reason for his decision.
"Both parties should be present so that we arrive at a compromise. Because, that very day the threats that went on my family till today, I can’t risk my life…. Not just my family, but even myself," he told JoyNews.
The chaos erupted after the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate, Ebi Bright, demanded a complete re-collation of votes from all polling stations in compliance with a court order.
She insisted that the Electoral Commission (EC) start the process afresh, instead of continuing from where it had previously ended.
Tempers flared in the collation room as Ebi Bright, joined by Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, expressed their frustrations over the EC's refusal to undertake a full re-collation.
Both NDC representatives stormed out of the collation center in protest, leaving the process stalled.
Mr. Brobbey’s decision to pause proceedings highlights the heightened tensions surrounding the exercise.
There is heavy security at the EC G/A Regional office.
Meanwhile, the re-collation of parliamentary election results for the Obuasi East constituency has confirmed Patrick Boakye Yiadom of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) as the winner by a 19-vote margin.
The process, conducted at the Greater Accra Electoral Commission (EC) Office, forms part of nine constituencies undergoing re-collation today.
The EC official this morning indicated that Mr Boakye Yiadom garnered 18,558 votes to retain his seat, edging out his closest contender, Samuel Aboagye of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), who secured 18,539 votes.
An independent candidate, Adjei Owusu Afriyie, trailed with 424 votes.
The re-collation was ordered following disputes over procedural irregularities during the initial tally.
