Berekuso was filled with excitement on Wednesday, 18 December 2024, as the Cuties Christmas Readerfeast, themed "Reading Round the Christmas Tree", brought together pupils from Berekuso Primary A and B schools for a day dedicated to promoting literacy.
Organised by the Cuties Readerfeast Foundation, the event, held in Berekuso in the Eastern Region, aimed to foster a love for reading and enhance English proficiency among children in rural areas
“Our initiative aims to foster a love for reading and improve English speaking skills among children in rural areas. We recognise that this is an ongoing process, and we’re committed to supporting our Cuties every step of the way,” said the Founder of Cuties Readerfeast, Elikem Adiku, in her welcome address.
Ms. Adiku highlighted the role of parents and guardians in nurturing a love for reading among children.
“In this digital age, it’s easy to get caught up in technology, but reading is an essential skill that will benefit them[children] throughout their lives,” she stressed.
Ms. Adiku also expressed her hope that the pupils would carry the joy of reading into their everyday lives, summing up the day’s message: “Let the love of reading be the gift that keeps on giving.”
The Special Guest for the event, Nana Odei Leebi, Apesamakahene, urged the children to develop a regular reading habit.
“Take your books seriously and practise reading regularly. It will shape your future,” he encouraged.
The Readerfeast, coined from the words read and feast, began with participants being screened and assigned to reading groups based on their proficiency. The main reading clinic followed, featuring fun, interactive, and non-traditional teaching methods to engage the children with storybooks.
After the clinic, the children were treated to a festive feast, where they enjoyed delicious food and drinks. The celebration continued with a lively dancing competition, games of musical chairs, and other entertaining activities. Each participant left with souvenirs to commemorate the joyous occasion.
