The controversial statue of President Akufo-Addo at the entrance of the Effia-Nkwanta Regional Hospital in Sekondi-Takoradi has been repaired after a portion of it was found damaged earlier this week.
On Monday, December 16, 2024, residents noticed a gaping hole at the back of one of the statue’s legs.
While some speculated the damage was an act of vandalism by those who had previously vowed to pull down the monument, others attributed it to a possible structural defect.
By Wednesday evening, workers had restored the damaged section, making the statue appear as good as new. However, the incident remains unresolved.
The Ghana police, in a statement, said are ongoing but have yet to provide any leads or make arrests.
The statue, unveiled during President Akufo-Addo’s tour of the Western Region, was installed to commemorate key developmental projects under his administration, including the rehabilitation of the Effia-Nkwanta Regional Hospital, the Sinohydro 3-tier interchange, and the Takoradi Market Circle redevelopment.
Since it was unveiled, the statue has sparked significant debate among residents, with some praising it as a symbol of progress and others criticizing it as a misallocation of resources.
As investigations continue, the repaired statue now stands tall once again.
However, the mystery surrounding the damage and the ongoing debate over its relevance persists.
