Miracles Aboagye, the spokesperson for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer's campaign for election 2024, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has urged outgoing government appointees to comply with the presidency’s directive to return government vehicles.
His comment comes after the office of the president instructed all government appointees, including Ministers, Deputy Ministers, Regional Ministers, Special Assistants, and officials on statutory boards, to return state vehicles by January 3, 2025.
The statement, signed by the Director of Communications at the presidency, Eugene Arhin, reiterated that political appointees are prohibited from acquiring government vehicles for personal use.
All affected individuals must return their vehicles to the Chief Director of their respective ministries by the specified deadline.
Speaking in an interview on GHOne TV, Aboagye responded to questions about appointees' retention of government vehicles.
He revealed that he had already returned the Land Cruiser he was provided to use.
Aboagye questioned why appointees would want to keep government property.
He said, “Why are you buying a government vehicle? Why? Yes. I’ve returned it, it was a Toyota Land Cruiser, as a Presidential Staff Executive Secretary for the Inter-Ministerial Coordinating Committee on Decentralization.
"I returned it on Monday. Why are you driving it? I could have kept it until January 6th to formally hand it over, but I’ve taken it back."
