The Chair of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Council of Elders for South Africa, Mr Benjamin Kofi Quashie, has shared his views about the outcome of the 2024 general elections.
He reiterated that John Mahama's election is a feather in the cap of Ghana's democratic journey, emphasizing that it shows Ghanaians cannot be taken for granted.
Speaking on JoyNews’ AM Show on Tuesday, Mr Quashie said the overwhelming endorsement of the NDC signifies that the Ghanaian voter is enlightened enough to appreciate the actions and inaction of politicians.
"The outcome of the elections should put Ghanaian politicians on their toes since silence can't be equated to docility from the electorates."
In assessing the contributions of the NDC's running mate to their victory, he noted that while the media limelight was focused on the flagbearer, Prof Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang was focused on identifiable groups, especially women.
“This ensured we [NDC] got the women's votes. Though she wasn't loudly seen within the media, she really worked” he said.
Reacting to the post-election violence, the SA Council of Elders Chair condemned the violent acts.
According to him, the jubilant mood of Ghanaians, especially the NDC supporters is understandable but, "the time has come for them to recoil into their shells, halt the jubilation and start focusing on how to help President Mahama to have a smooth transition. We cannot continue on this rampage. It's time to let cool heads prevail.”
