Mental health challenges are escalating in Africa, with over 116 million people on the continent living with mental health conditions, according to the World Health Organization.
Depression and anxiety rank among the most common issues, compounded by daily stressors, conflicts, and inadequate access to mental health care.
Despite these pressing concerns, faith remains deeply rooted in African communities, offering a source of resilience and support for many individuals struggling with their mental health.
To bridge the gap between spirituality and mental health, a UK-based NGO, Beyond The Ward is organising a virtual seminar titled “Mental Wellbeing and Spirituality: Bridging the Gap”.
The free event, scheduled for Friday, December 13, 2024, at 19:30 GMT, will feature insights from notable speakers including Beyond The Ward founder, Angel Furah Senga, Founder and Team Lead, Get Out Of Depression Foundation (G.O.O.D) Helena Amoah, Personal Development Advocate, Mabel Darko, and Mental Health journalist with Ghana-based Asaase Radio, Caleb Ahinakwah.
The discussion will be moderated by Connielove Dzodzegbe and aims to equip participants with tools to integrate faith into mental health practices effectively.
This debut event will also witness the official launch of the Beyond The Ward Foundation.
This seminar is particularly timely, as recent UNICEF findings reveal that 60% of African youth needed mental health support in the past year, yet many were unsure where to seek help.
Such gaps highlight the need for initiatives that combine cultural and spiritual frameworks with practical mental health solutions.
