The incumbent Member of Parliament for Assin North, James Gyakye Quayson, has retained his seat in the 2024 Presidential and Parliamentary elections.
Representing the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr Quayson secured 18,023 votes, which represents 56.35% of the total valid votes cast.
His closest challenger, Charles Opoku of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), received 13,599 votes, amounting to 42.52%.
Quayson’s political journey has been fraught with controversy. During the 2020 parliamentary elections, it was revealed that he had violated Article 94(2)(a) of Ghana’s Constitution, which disqualifies individuals holding dual citizenship from serving as Members of Parliament.
This led to the Supreme Court annulling the results of the Assin North election.
However, Quayson made a remarkable comeback in a by-election on June 27, 2023, and was sworn in as MP on July 4, 2023.
