Sulamana Issifu, a member of the New Patriotic Party's legal team for the Ejura Sekyeredumase Constituency in the Ashanti region, has called for a complete recount of ballot papers from all 177 polling stations.
This follows concerns raised by the NPP regarding alleged manipulation of the ballot papers and irregularities during the elections.
In a press briefing held after the elections, the legal team accused the Electoral Commission (EC) of committing serious errors. Issifu stated that ballot papers had been tainted with manipulated pink sheets.
“The elections in Ejura, which were supposed to be free and fair, have been marred by numerous mistakes, some of which the EC has admitted to. They [EC] have acknowledged that they made significant errors, and these mistakes go to the heart of the integrity of the elections,” Issifu said.
Issifu, speaking to the media, made it clear that the NPP rejects the election results in the constituency. He further revealed that the party had formally petitioned the Electoral Commission, insisting that until a full recount is conducted, they will not accept the provisional results released by the EC.
He also alleged incidents of violence and ballot snatching in areas considered strongholds of the NPP. Issifu claimed that the military had to intervene to restore order in some locations.
Furthermore, Issifu claimed that the EC had confirmed that, in some instances, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) had received a score of zero, while the NPP had recorded figures.
“The EC called us a few moments ago and told us that there were places where the NDC was given zero, while some figures were recorded for the NPP. These were described as transpositional errors,” he explained.
He emphasized that, due to the alleged tampering with the pink sheets, the NPP rejected the numbers recorded on them.
Meanwhile, the NDC has rejected calls for a recount. A member of the party's legal team, Stanley Tweneboah Kodua Gyamfi, told the press that per the laws governing the elections, recounting can only be done at the polling station and not at the collation centre.
