A near brawl erupted at the Sakasaka Quarters A polling station in the Tamale Metropolitan District in the Northern Region when a voter attempted to snap a photo of their ballot.
This incident sparked a heated confrontation with a political party agent.
The incident occurred as the voter, whose identity remains undisclosed, took out a phone inside the polling booth to photograph their ballot. The action was spotted by the party agent, who confronted the voter, without notifying the presiding officer leading to a tense altercation.
The situation disrupted voting temporarily as officials worked to restore calm.
The presiding officer of the Electoral Commission at the station, Abdullai Mohammed confirmed the incident in an interview with JoyNews.
“A voter came to cast the vote, not knowing, the voter was holding a phone with him, so the agent suspected that the voter was going to snap his vote. Instead of the agent alerting the presiding officer, the agent went straight to the voter so that brought the confusion here,” he said.
According to him, he went there security to settle the issue and later gave the ballot to the voter to cast the vote.
The matter was resolved without escalation, and voting resumed shortly after.
Electoral officials have since reiterated the need for voters to comply with regulations to ensure a smooth and peaceful process.
