Former Special Prosecutor, Martin Amidu, has descended heavily on the flagbearer of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, describing him as an incompetent candidate who should not be the country’s next president.
In one of his epistles released three days before the 2024 general election, Amidu revealed how Vice President Dr Bawumia entered Ghana’s politics. Providing a political history of the vice president’s family, Martin Amidu stated that Dr Bawumia and his family were originally members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) until he transitioned to the NPP after his wish to become the NDC’s running mate failed.
Amidu stated that he would not endorse Dr Bawumia for the presidency because his boss, the sitting president, Nana Akufo-Addo, is corrupt and has failed the country.
He referred to Dr Bawumia as a product of Nana Akufo-Addo, describing him as a "clone" and "poodle" of the president.
“The process of grooming, cloning, and socialising Dr Bawumia as Nana Akufo-Addo’s poodle began, leading to the sharing of similar governance principles, which Bawumia espoused at the Walewale rally,” he said.
“Nana Akufo-Addo has so successfully groomed Dr Bawumia in his own character and image that he can rest assured that when Dr Bawumia succeeds him as president, the fruits of 'Ohene sℇ wo foro akoŋwa yi na sℇ wo aŋya sika a, wↄ bℇka sℇ wo yℇ okwasanpa ni' will be protected from auditing for his family, friends, and cronies under his regime to sleep in peace,” he added.
The former Attorney General further claimed that a vote for Dr Bawumia to become president is a vote for Nana Akufo-Addo, which will lead to nothing but the continuation of the country's current hardships.
“The choice facing the electorate on 7 December 2024 is, therefore, to vote for Mahamudu Bawumia as Nana Akufo-Addo’s anointed successor and continue suffering under the 'create, loot, and share' principle they both hold in common, or vote for change to enable probity and accountability, as demanded by the Constitution, to prevail,” he said.
He also stated that he could not endorse Dr Bawumia’s candidacy because he lacks integrity and is incapable of helping the country.
“I cannot, as a person born in the then NT, recommend Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as a person with the traits of honesty, integrity, and selfless service exhibited by our forebears from the NT to the Republic of Ghana to be elected on 7 December 2024 as president, symbolizing a representation of northerners on an NPP ticket for Ghana.
"Dr Mahamudu Bawumia is not only an opportunist and a pretender, but he has also lost track of the high moral character associated with his own biological family and the forebears of Northern Ghana,” he added.
It would be recalled that Mr Martin Amidu, who was made Ghana's first special prosecutor eventually resigned after falling out with President Akufo-Addo and tagging him with corruption.
