The Council of Elders of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has called on Ghanaians to elect a president who will "restore honour and service to our body politic."
According to the NDC elders, these qualities are embodied by former President John Dramani Mahama, whom they described as a leader with a passion for pursuing the broader national interest. This appeal was contained in a statement read by the Chairman of the Council of Elders, Alhaji Mahama Iddrisu, after a meeting to discuss matters related to the 2024 election.
The statement urged the Electoral Commission to ensure a free, fair, and transparent election while calling on the National Elections Security Task Force to strictly enforce electoral rules.
The Council also demanded that steps be taken to prevent vigilantes associated with the New Patriotic Party (NPP) from causing chaos under the guise of national security, as witnessed during the 2019 Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election and the 2020 Techiman South incidents.
The elders criticized the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia administration for its handling of the country’s affairs, which they claim has heightened public interest in the election and strengthened calls for change. They accused the government of mismanaging Ghana’s economy, destroying businesses, and depriving the poor, including pensioners, of what rightfully belongs to them.
The Council further alleged that, in the days leading up to the elections, the government has suddenly found funds to repair long-neglected roads and distribute money to voters who have been kept impoverished for years.
They characterized this as an attempt to win favour from the electorate at the last minute.
Describing the upcoming election as a pivotal moment akin to a battle for the soul of Ghana, the NDC elders concluded by urging all citizens to make history by voting to end eight years of what they called impunity, corruption, and nepotism under the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia government.
