The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Council of Elders has called on the Electoral Commission (EC) to ensure that the upcoming elections are conducted in a free, fair, and peaceful manner.
The appeal was made during a press briefing on Tuesday, where the Council emphasised the crucial role of the EC in safeguarding Ghana’s democratic principles.
Addressing the media, the Chairman of the NDC Council of Elders, Mahama Iddrisu, stressed that the credibility of the elections hinges on the neutrality and professionalism of the EC.
He urged the Commission to prioritise transparency and fairness in all electoral processes, adding that public trust in the institution is vital for national stability.
The Council also highlighted the need for the EC to remain impartial and resist any attempts to influence its operations.
Alhaji Iddrisu noted that any perception of bias could erode confidence in the election results and lead to unnecessary tension.
He called on all electoral officials to carry out their duties with integrity and dedication to Ghana’s democratic ideals.
The NDC Council of Elders reiterated their commitment to peaceful elections and urged all stakeholders, including political parties, security agencies, and civil society organisations, to work together to maintain peace and order.
They called on the public to actively participate in the electoral process while respecting the laws and guidelines set out by the EC.
"We urge the Electoral Commission to get its act together if they are to ensure free, fair, and credible elections."
"It isn't easy for the public to accept its assurance for robust and transparent elections when, day in and day out, you hear and read of stories suggesting poor management on its part, the latest being the last-minute decision to reprint ballot papers for Special voting in the Western and Eastern regions of Ghana."
