As Ghana prepares for its pivotal 2024 general elections this weekend, the Private Newspapers and Online News Publishers Association of Ghana (PRINPAG) has issued a clarion call to its members to prioritise professionalism, neutrality, and the promotion of peace during their election coverage.

PRINPAG reminded its members of their crucial role as mediators of public information and guardians of democracy.

The association urged journalists to adhere strictly to professional standards by verifying facts before publication, avoiding sensationalism, and refraining from disseminating unverified claims that could escalate tensions.

“As watchdogs of democracy, neutrality and objectivity must guide your actions,” PRINPAG emphasised, cautioning against extreme partisanship that could erode trust in media institutions.

In its statement, PRINPAG encouraged members to prioritise content that fosters unity and understanding while steering clear of divisive or inflammatory rhetoric.

“The media has a responsibility to educate the public on the importance of peaceful participation in the electoral process and to promote civic responsibility,” the association noted.

Recognising the potential risks journalists face during election periods, PRINPAG called on members to prioritise their personal security.

It urged them to promptly report any threats, intimidation, or attacks to both state security agencies and the PRINPAG leadership for immediate intervention.

The PRINPAG Secretariat will remain operational throughout the election period, offering administrative support and assistance to members as needed.

The association also reaffirmed its commitment to holding its members accountable, warning of sanctions for any breaches of ethical guidelines or unprofessional conduct.

PRINPAG expressed confidence in the ability of its members to contribute positively to Ghana’s democratic journey, commending their efforts in the lead-up to the elections.

“Together, we can make history as a media fraternity that champions peace and democracy,” the statement added.
