Morocco's 15-year-old golfing whizz-kid, Sofia Cherif Essakali, has made history by leading the nation to victory at the 16th All Africa Challenge Trophy (AACT) - Africa’s premier Women’s Golf competition.
The three-day event, held at the Tazegzout Golf Course in Agadir under the presidency of HRH Prince Moulay Rachid, featured 20 nations including golf powerhouse South Africa, which had won 14 of the previous 15 editions.
Sofia’s exceptional performance was pivotal to Morocco's triumph, with her individual score of -12 securing both the team title and the individual championship.
Her outstanding contribution, together with compatriots Rim Imni, Nadia Sanz Ouezzani, and captain Raja Hasnaoui, helped Morocco finish with a team score of -7, ahead of South Africa (-5) and Kenya (+7).
It marked Morocco’s first-ever team victory in the AACT and only its second individual title in the competition's history.
The triumph also reflects the Royal Moroccan Golf Federation's structured and innovative approach to nurturing young talent, which is overseen by His Royal Highness Prince Moulay Rachid.
The achievement, not only highlights Morocco’s growing influence in women’s golf but also cements Sofia’s position as a beacon of hope for the sport’s future in Africa and beyond.
Since its inception in 1992, the AACT has provided a platform to promote and celebrate women’s golf on the continent.
