GFA calls for calm amid Black Stars’ AFCON qualification failure

The Communications Director of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Henry Asante-Twum, has appealed for calm following the Black Stars’ failure to qualify for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Ghana’s national team finished at the bottom of Group F with just three points, marking the first time in 21 years that the country will miss the continental tournament, set to be hosted in Morocco next year.

In the wake of the disappointing campaign, the GFA dissolved the Black Stars’ management committee and convened a meeting on Wednesday, 20 November 2024, to address the team's poor performance. Head coach Otto Addo was summoned to provide a detailed report on the qualifiers.

Speaking on Game Plan on Joy FM, Asante-Twum urged fans and the media to stay composed during this challenging period.

"The first thing, the most important thing, is to have calm nerves. When your nerves are calm, you will be able to take important decisions," he stated.

Asante-Tum further outlined the steps taken during two Executive Council (ExCo) meetings to evaluate the situation.

"The first meeting was to look into the entire journey of the Black Stars’ AFCON qualifiers—the six games we played. In that meeting, there was a decision to disband the then [Black Stars] management committee, which was chaired by the vice president of the FA, Mark Addo. After that, the council decided to listen to the [Black Stars head] coach," he explained.

He added, "Otto [Addo] was invited to present his report… and he made his report available. Copies have been made to the various members of the council."

The GFA’s actions come amid widespread public disappointment over the Black Stars’ historic failure to qualify for Africa’s most prestigious football tournament.
