As Ghanaians head to the polls for parliamentary and presidential elections on December 7, the United States says it wishes the Ghanaian people a peaceful, transparent and fair process.
Presidential Candidates on Thursday, November 28, signed a presidential peace pact with the leading contenders, John Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party’s Candidate Dr Mahamudu Bawumia committing to peace at the instance of the National Peace Council in Partnership with the Institute for Democratic Governance (IDEG).
Also present at the event were the Chief Justice, Justice Gertrude Sackey Torkornoo, the National Chief Imam, Sheik Nuhu Sharabutu, former ECOWAS President, Dr Mohammed Ibn Chambas, Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Jean Mensa, and other presidential candidates.
In a statement released to the press, Rolf A. Olson, Chargé d’Affaires at the U.S Embassy, Accra commended the presidential candidates for signing the 4th Presidential Elections Peace Pact and congratulated the National Peace Council and the Institute of Democratic Governance for their tireless stewardship of this important initiative.
“The will of the Ghanaian people must not be thwarted by the threat of violence before, during, or after the upcoming elections.
The United States wishes Ghana a peaceful, transparent, and credible electoral process on December 7,” the statement noted.
Earlier in October, the United States instituted a new strategy to safeguard democracy in Ghana. This move which comes in the form of a visa restriction policy comes barely eight days to the December 7 presidential and parliamentary elections.
However, in this latest statement, Rolf A. Olson, Chargé d’Affaires, indicated that “The United States wishes Ghana a peaceful, transparent, and credible electoral process on December 7”.
