The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has refuted allegations circulating on social media that some of its field workers and offices in the Nkawkaw Municipality of the Eastern Region are involved in fraudulent activities and political sabotage.

The allegations, which appeared in a circular attributed to an individual identified as "Campaigner Generale," claimed that scammers posing as ECG staff were issuing fake bills with exorbitant charges to both prepaid and postpaid customers.

It said the scammers allegedly threatened to disconnect the power supply if payments were not made promptly.

The circular further suggested that these activities were part of a deliberate plot to undermine the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government and its leadership in the Nkawkaw constituency.

But responding to this in a statement, the ECG categorically denied the claims, describing them as false and baseless.

"ECG does not, and will not, directly or indirectly, collaborate with “scammers" to scam our cherished customers, and or sabotage any political party and its leadership," part of the statement read.

ECG clarified that the ongoing activities in the Nkawkaw District are part of a Loss Reduction Project (LRP) aimed at reducing commercial losses and improving service delivery.

As part of this initiative, partner companies are replacing malfunctioning meters with modern, MMS-compliant ones.

The statement further said that ECG teams are also conducting revenue mobilisation exercises, which are always preceded by public announcements to affected communities.

The company said that these legitimate operational activities are unrelated to any political scheme, dismissing the allegations as unfounded.

"As a customer-focused organization and a responsible member of society, ECG disassociates itself from any fraudulent activity of any sort," the statement affirmed.

ECG assured its customers and the general public of its commitment to providing reliable and improved services and urged them to disregard the circulating claims.
