Election Watch Ghana has raised serious concerns about Ghana's democracy and national security following allegations by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) at a press conference on Tuesday.

The allegations accuse the New Patriotic Party (NPP) of orchestrating the training of thugs, allegedly under the leadership of a senior military officer.

In a strongly worded statement, Election Watch Ghana condemned these allegations, urging the NPP to take immediate action to dismantle any criminal activities or organisations potentially aimed at undermining the peace and security of the country during the upcoming general elections.

Firm stance against violence

Election Watch Ghana reiterated its commitment to ensuring a peaceful and fair electoral process, making it clear that any acts of violence or disruption from either the NPP or the NDC will not be tolerated.

“We will hold accountable any political party responsible for disturbing the electoral process,” the statement read. “Election Watch and the Ghanaian people are united in rejecting violence and promoting peace.”

Key demands and recommendations

The organisation called on both major political parties to prioritise the safety and well-being of Ghanaians over political ambitions.

Additionally, Election Watch Ghana urged the nation’s security agencies to maintain impartiality, ensuring the integrity of the electoral process.

“We demand that both parties place the interests of the people above their own and that the military and security forces take immediate steps to address and prevent the involvement of personnel in any criminal activities related to the elections,” the statement emphasised.

A message to Ghanaians

To the people of Ghana, Election Watch Ghana offered reassurances of solidarity, encouraging citizens to reject violence and embrace peace as the nation approaches a critical moment in its democratic journey.

“Together, we will ensure that Ghana emerges victorious, regardless of the election outcome,” said Mark Ewusi Arkoh, the spokesperson for Election Watch Ghana.

Election Watch Ghana reaffirmed its dedication to safeguarding Ghana’s democracy and national unity and called on all stakeholders to work collaboratively to ensure that the 2024 elections are peaceful, transparent, and reflective of the will of the people.
