Elijah Kwame Owusu Danso, the running mate for John Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, has discounted claims that the position of a Vice President is merely titular.

Speaking to Joy FM's Kwame Dadzie on Showbiz A-Z, the musician-turned-politician said the Vice President has very important roles to play in governance.

"Why does the constitution say that we must have a Vice President? Of course, the Vice President plays a very pivotal role. And I will explain to you why. The Vice President is also voted for, people don't know. Because you are on the same ticket with the President," he said.

According to him, there are some people who even vote for a political party because of their running mate. Because of this, he said it was impossible for any Vice President to running away from blame when the government experiences challenges.

"When you look at the constitution, in the absence of the President, the Vice President is the person who acts in his stead. So the Vice President cannot extricate himself from the operations of government. So you have a role to play," he added.

Making an allusion to Dr Mahamudu Bawumia who is the Vice President of Ghana and the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), he said he trumpeted the NPP's virtues and his qualification as an economist but could not save the economy as the Chairman of the Economic Management Team.

"If you say that you are the driver's mate and that gives you some level of comfort, because you are going into an election, I find that to be very disingenuous and disrespectful to the Ghanaian people because we know exactly who you are. You are taking all the praise for what you describe as digitalisation but you are not taking criticism for the failure of the economy. I think that is double standards. So the driver's mate is as important as the driver," Kwame noted.

Dr. Bawumia has said on a number of platforms that he intends to do more for Ghanaians if he is elected as President because in his current position as Vice President, he is limited on what he can do.

Addressing the nation on Wednesday, February 7, 2024 in Accra, Bawumia said he had learnt lessons from the seven years of the Akufo-Addo government and reviewed his visions for the country.

“As Vice-President, I am like a driver’s mate. But if, by the Grace of God, you make me President, I will be in the driver's seat with constitutionally mandated authority to pursue my vision and my priorities.”

Clearly, the initial conditions that we inherited in 2017 are not the same as will be in 2025. Therefore, my priorities will be different. We have done many good things and I will be seeking to build on them,” he noted.

On Showbiz A-Z, Kwame Owusu Danso, also a lawyer, broadcaster and PR consultant said that he would be first Vice President to resign if the Movement for Change wins power and things do not go as expected.

He, therefore, intimated that Alan Kyerematen has the solutions to Ghana's ailing problems and believes if he is given the nod, he will make great improvement in the lives of Ghanaians.
