Former Black Stars Head Coach, CK Akonnor, has pronounced a damning verdict on the player selection process during his time in charge of the team.
Akonnor was the Black Stars coach for 21 months between 2020 and 2021, before being relieved of his role after a poor start to the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign.
Player selection has been a long standing topic of controversy in the Black Stars, and the ex Wolfsburg captain, has weighed in on the matter, confirming the suspicions of most football lovers.
According to Akonnor, having to defend his team selection to members of the Ghana Football Association was always an uncomfortable process.
“As a coach, you draw the list of players you want to use based on what you want to do. “Obviously, other members of the FA will also bring their views on board, but it was sometimes uncomfortable.
“I understand that they have to look into it and that football isn’t done by one person alone.
“However, in my case, it wasn’t a situation where we were working together. It was a mess.
“When I went in to justify my selections, it was always very uncomfortable,” he said on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show.
Ghana’s Black Stars have not played a knockout fixture in a major competition since 2019, with the team’s failure to qualify for AFCON 2025, the latest low.
