Three Members of Parliament (MPs) from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) have filed a motion seeking the repeal of the COVID-19 tax, arguing that it has become a burden on Ghanaians.
The motion was filed by Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, MP for Techiman North, Kwabena Mintah-Akandoh, MP for Juaboso, and Dr Seidu Jasaw, MP for Wa East.
The MPs submitted the motion to the Clerk of Parliament, calling for the tax to be abolished.
The MPs contend that the Covid-19 tax, which was introduced to support the government’s response to the pandemic, has outlived its purpose.
They argue that the Covid-19 outbreak is no longer a global pandemic, and it is no longer necessary to continue taxing citizens under these circumstances.
They describe the tax as a nuisance, which has placed undue financial strain on the public.
Additionally, the NDC MPs highlight that Ghana is the only country imposing a tax specifically for Covid-19, further questioning the justification for its continued existence.
They believe this is an anomaly and that the tax should be repealed to alleviate the financial pressures faced by ordinary Ghanaians.
In their memo, the MPs emphasise that Ghanaians are still grappling with economic hardships, and repealing the tax would provide much-needed relief.
They also argue that now is the right time to abolish the tax and help cushion citizens as they continue to recover from the aftereffects of the pandemic.
