The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has accused Ogyeahoho Yaw Gyebi II, the President of the National House of Chiefs, of stepping out of his neutral role and engaging in partisan politics.
Asiedu Nketia claims that Gyebi has been actively campaigning for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), a move he argues undermines the integrity of the traditional institution.
Speaking during his Ashanti Regional campaign in Odumase, Asiedu Nketia expressed disappointment that the president of the National House of Chiefs has chosen to support the NPP instead of using his influential position to help mediate the ongoing parliamentary impasse.
He warned that such actions could damage the credibility of the House of Chiefs and threaten the country's democratic processes.
Asiedu Nketia further accused him of compromising Ghana's cultural and traditional values by aligning himself with one political party.
He argued that the National House of Chiefs, as a non-partisan institution, should remain above political affiliations to preserve its role in promoting unity and resolving conflicts.
“He [Ogyeahoho Yaw Gyebi II] claims to be the president of the National House of Chiefs. I’ve seen him wear NPP-branded shorts and shirts campaigning for the party in his hometown.
"How can a leader of traditional authorities speak on the ills of the governing party if he openly supports them?"
“Have you heard or read any statement from him criticising the government? Now, we have no leader to speak to the ills in the country. The National House of Chiefs should be in the position to resolve the issues going on in parliament,” he said.
