Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has criticised former President John Dramani Mahama’s economic performance, describing it as the poorest among leaders of Ghana’s Fourth Republic.
Speaking at the Ghana CEO Presidential Gala held at the Movenpick Hotel on Thursday, November 7, Dr Bawumia emphasised that his critique was rooted in economic data rather than political bias.
Bawumia argued that under Mahama’s tenure, the economy faced significant setbacks across various sectors, including high inflation, low growth rates, and rising unemployment.
He noted that these indicators reflect a stark contrast to the economic trajectory Ghana has experienced under the NPP, underscoring what he views as a decisive failure in Mahama’s economic stewardship.
The NPP flagbearer further stated that his assessment was intended to be factual, aimed at highlighting the importance of sound economic management and accountability.
He urged the audience to consider the measurable impacts of Mahama’s policies, which he claims left Ghana’s economy in a vulnerable position.
Bawumia concluded by reaffirming his commitment to building on the economic progress made by the Akufo-Addo administration.
He reiterated his belief that competent leadership, grounded in data-driven policies, is essential for Ghana’s development, positioning himself as the candidate best suited to navigate the country through future economic challenges.
"It is important to note that notwithstanding the impact of the global economic crisis on our economy, it may come as a shock to some (including the former president himself) that when it comes to the 4th Republic, Former President Mahama has the worst economic performance of all Presidents in the fourth Republic."
"However, he seems not to understand that and continues to talk about our economic performance as if his was better."
