In a bid to bolster Ghana’s media resilience against digital threats, Cyberteq has delivered a cybersecurity awareness session for the management team and editors of Multimedia Group.
This initiative comes as part of Cybersecurity Awareness Month, with Ghana’s 2024 theme being “Combating Misinformation/Disinformation in a Digital Resilient Democracy – Our Collective Responsibility.”
The theme resonates with the nation’s socio-political environment, particularly as Ghana approaches its General Elections in December.
The session aimed to empower Multimedia’s editorial and management teams with essential cybersecurity knowledge, covering a range of pressing topics from cybersecurity fundamentals to the complex issues surrounding misinformation, disinformation, and malinformation.
This training is especially relevant for media houses, whose editorial teams play a crucial role in protecting the public from misleading information.
Equipping Media Leaders to Combat Disinformation
The training session addressed the need for media professionals to navigate the rapidly evolving cybersecurity landscape, equipping them to safeguard operations, uphold journalistic integrity, and ensure that their content is rooted in verified facts.
With the media’s critical role in Ghana’s democracy, the importance of this initiative cannot be overstated. Multimedia Group’s management team expressed their gratitude for the training and underscored its relevance in Ghana’s current digital and political climate.
They emphasised that such initiatives are vital to preserving democracy and ensuring that media houses remain credible sources of information for the public.
Cyberteq’s Commitment to a Secure Digital Future
Ben Tagoe, CEO of Cyberteq Falcon Limited, commended Multimedia Group for its dedication to promoting Ghana’s democracy through objective and independent journalism.
Tagoe highlighted the importance of combating misinformation and disinformation, noting that these threats pose significant risks not only to public trust but to national peace and progress. He called on all organisations and individuals to recognise cybersecurity as a fundamental responsibility within a digital society.
“In the past, cybersecurity was viewed as a necessity for a select few,” Mr. Tagoe remarked. “But with growing digitalisation, it has become imperative for all individuals and organisations to step up the protection of their cyberspace.”
He added that cybersecurity is an essential component of Ghana’s digital progress and national stability, especially as digital threats evolve in sophistication.
Strengthening Media Resilience in a Complex Information Landscape
Tagoe noted the critical role that media houses play in promoting an informed and democratic society, particularly in light of the growing sophistication of disinformation campaigns.
“We are extremely delighted with the efforts of the Multimedia Group over the years to promote Ghana’s democracy through independent, unbiased journalism,” he said, adding that “Unfortunately, in this era of increasingly sophisticated disinformation, there is a need to support media houses in Ghana to tackle this challenge and preserve the peace and prosperity of our nation.”
Cyberteq’s partnership with Multimedia Group is a broader commitment to protecting the integrity of information in Ghana. The training underscores the need for continuous professional development in cybersecurity within media organisations, reinforcing their capability to act as gatekeepers of credible information.
As Ghana heads towards its General Elections, the timing of this initiative highlights the shared responsibility of stakeholders in media, government, and private sectors to uphold the integrity of information.
The initiative not only reinforces the Multimedia Group’s resilience against digital threats but also strengthens the country’s democratic fabric in an increasingly complex digital age.
