Chairman of McDan Group, Dr. Daniel Mckorley

The CEO of McDan Group, Dr Daniel McKorley has expressed frustration over politicians making policies for businesses, arguing that it should be private sector leaders guiding economic decisions that impact businesses.

At the Ghana CEO-Presidential Gala Dinner on Thursday in Accra, he shed light on the disconnect he perceives between policy-makers and the realities of entrepreneurship.

“I can tell you that we’re living in a country where politicians sit down and drive policies for the private sector,” McKorley said pointedly.

“But who understands business? I’ve had many occasions where I walked into a minister’s office, explained something, and he didn’t understand—and he never will.”

Drawing from over 30 years of business experience, Dr McKorley stated that policy-makers often lack the perspective and knowledge needed to make sound business-related decisions.

“These are politicians who have never employed three people in their whole life,” he noted.

“Yet they sit and enact policies for me—a person paying over 7,000 people.”

For McKorley, government’s role should be to support entrepreneurs and enable them to create jobs, while policy-making for business should be rooted in real-world business experience.

“Our job as entrepreneurs is to create jobs, and government’s job is to aid us,” he stated. McKorley warned that without more business-minded policies, Ghana risks stifling its private sector and losing out on significant economic growth.
