Dr Bossman Asare, Deputy Chairman in charge of Corporate Services at the Electoral Commission

The Deputy Chairman in charge of Corporate Services at the Electoral Commission (EC), Dr. Bossman Asare, has assured the public, including political parties, that the Commission will provide detailed summaries of the Voters Register latest by Monday, 11 November, even though it is not obligated to do so.

He stated that EC technicians are working around the clock to extract the various summaries, which will soon be accessible to the general public.

And although he explained that the Commission is not obligated by any legal provision to provide such data to the political parties, Dr. Asare said that all statistics related to the Voters Register for the 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections can be queried from the certified register, which the Commission has already supplied to political parties.

Several political parties, led by the National Democratic Congress, have requested a detailed breakdown, including the total number of registered voters, transferred votes, constituency and regional voter populations, a proxy list, and various other specifics, to enable them verify the credibility of the register.

Dr. Asare confirmed that all requested information can be obtained from the registers given to the parties, stating, “The Commission took it upon itself to ensure that we will provide all this data, not only at the national level but also at the regional level. We assured the parties that we would provide this information, though we couldn’t consolidate all the details initially. However, what is crucial is that the Commission has fulfilled its legal obligation by providing a certified register to the political parties, as required by law, which we did yesterday,” he told Emefa Apawu on Joy News’ Top Story on Thursday.

He further noted that a close examination of C.I. 91 (Regulation 27) clearly indicates that once the certified register is prepared, the EC must make it available to the political parties and other relevant entities within 21 days.

“This is precisely what the EC has done. If you are a party, it is your responsibility to review the document provided. You’ll find the total number registered per region, enabling you to determine the national figure. Nonetheless, the EC is committed to simplifying this process for political parties by providing summaries at both the national and regional levels. Producing these summaries requires auditing, and those processes are currently underway…”

Meanwhile the EC has maintained that the Voters Register is robust and credible and has therefore urged the public to support the Commission to deliver free, fair, transparent and credible elections come December 7, 2024.
