Speaker is acting in bad faith – Afenyo-Markin

Leader of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Members of Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has accused Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin of acting in bad faith.

Addressing a press briefing on Thursday, he criticised the Speaker's stance on prioritising the Constitution over the authority of the judiciary.

Mr Afenyo-Markin questioned the Speaker’s assertion that he respects the Constitution but does not feel bound by judicial decisions, expressing concern over Mr Bagbin's suggestion that the judiciary is aligned with the President.

“How can Mr Speaker say that he respects the Constitution but he will not subject himself to the dictate of the Judiciary? How can you say that the Judiciary is colluding with the President and you mention the President as an individual? What the Speaker is doing is in bad faith,” the Effutu MP said.

He noted that after the Speaker lost in the Supreme Court while attempting to overturn the stay on his ruling, he then turned to attack the apex court.

According to the lawmaker, a "true democrat" would respect the rule of law, even when decisions do not align with their interests.

Additionally, Mr Afenyo-Markin expressed disappointment with the Speaker's non-reconciliatory posture on Wednesday accusing the Speaker of setting the country on fire

The NPP Caucus has called on Mr Bagbin to adopt a more statesmanlike approach.

This briefing comes after the Speaker adjourned Parliament again indefinitely after Members of Parliament (MPs) from the NPP failed to attend the session.

The Speaker announced that without the presence of the NPP MPs, the house could not meet the quorum needed to make decisions, besides, there was no business before the house, thus preventing any legislative action from taking place.
