The Electoral Commission (EC) on Wednesday, 6th November 2024, announced that it has distributed the Certified Voters Register to all registered political parties and independent presidential candidates. This distribution, conducted in compliance with Sub-Regulation 4 of Regulation 27 of Constitutional Instrument (C.I.) 91, provides parties with crucial electoral data in advance of the December elections.
The Certified Voters Register, shared as a soft copy on external hard drives, includes the Valid Voters Register, along with several supplementary lists: the Exceptions List, the Multiples List, the Transferred Voters List, the Absent Voters List, the Manual Verification List, the Proxy Voters List, and the Special Voters List.
This comprehensive package aims to equip parties with the information needed to facilitate a smooth and transparent election process.
At the briefing, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) requested a summary of the various lists included. Although the EC is not legally required to provide a statistical breakdown, it agreed to honour the NDC’s request in a gesture of transparency and responsiveness.
The EC generated these summaries on a regional basis, though the process took time to complete. The parties, having waited, ultimately requested that the EC send them the breakdown later.
In its press release, the EC clarified that this is the first time any political party has requested such a detailed summary. Historically, since 1992, the EC has provided only the soft copies of the Certified Voters Register, without the additional breakdowns.
The Commission also reaffirmed its commitment to timely and transparent processes, highlighting that it had met its commitment to release the Certified Voters Register within the first week of November, as promised during the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting on 15th October 2024.
The EC assured stakeholders of the credibility and robustness of the Certified Voters Register and called on the public to support its efforts to deliver a free, fair, and transparent election in December.
