Renowned businessman, Sam Jonah, has proposed modeling of the National Service Scheme used in countries like Finland, South Korea, and Israel, where young people spend a year in military service.
Mr Jonah believes that this approach would instill discipline, confidence, and resilience in the Ghana's youth.
Speaking on Tuesday, November 5, the businessman says this will be a transformative measure in the national service and education framework.
The remarks were made in a statement that highlights both a vision for the character development of young Ghanaians and a critique of current educational practices.
The statesman was speaking on how Ghana can successfully educate her population for the attainment of desired cultural values, peace and collective prosperity.
Addressing the gathering, Mr Jonah explained that while Ghana’s current national service concept is commendable, more can be done to ensure it builds strong character among participants.
“The concept of national service, while commendable, must be looked at critically to ensure the building of character in all our youth. In this regard, I strongly suggest that we model our national service on similar ones in Finland, South Korea, Israel, and other nations where all graduates and persons aged over 19 serve in the military for a year,” he stated.
He added that such a model has been successful elsewhere in building discipline, confidence, and resilience in young citizens, qualities he considers essential for personal and national development.
