Attorney General and Minister for Justice Godfred Yeboah Dame has celebrated the historic rise of Efua Ghartey as the first female President of the Ghana Bar Association (GBA).
Speaking at the swearing-in ceremony of the new executives on Monday in Accra, he described her leadership as having a “divine touch.”
Mr Godfred Dame praised Mrs Ghartey’s journey, highlighting the symbolic timing of her presidency following the passage of Ghana’s Affirmative Action Act earlier this year.
“It seemed to have a divine touch and meant for a time like this,” he said, drawing a parallel between Ghartey’s journey and that of her mentor, President Nana Akufo-Addo.
Like Akufo-Addo, Mrs Ghartey was elected on her third attempt.
The Attorney General noted that her accomplishment shattered “the glass ceiling of male domination” in the legal profession, setting a powerful precedent.
Mr Dame also underscored the role of women in Ghana’s legal sector, attributing the “virtual minimisation of corruption” in his office to the dominance of female attorneys.
“The female domination…is partly responsible for the virtual minimisation of corruption in the Office,” he said.
He cited studies showing that women in Ghana are less susceptible to corruption than their male counterparts.
