The lawyer and spokesman for the Mamprusi tribe in the Upper East region, Dauda Jawura Salifu, has urged the factions of the two chiefs of the Bawku enclave, Seidu and Naaba Asigri Azoka II, to stop the violence and engage in peaceful dialogue.
Recently, the resurgence of the conflict has claimed 16 lives. This conflict dates back to the 1930s and has over the years resulted in numerous deaths and destruction of property in the area.
It has also hindered the Bawku area's development and economic growth for decades.
Speaking on Joy News’ AM Show on Wednesday, October 30, 2024, Dauda Salifu said, “The peace I am asking for is that the guns should be silenced. When the guns are blazing, we can’t even sit down and talk for peace to prevail.”
He added that the conflict is “taking us back, because we are not seeing the reality of our situation; we are still going backward. What is there in the chieftaincy matters apart from the fact that it is our identity?”
As part of efforts to ensure lasting peace in the area, the chieftaincy ministry has appointed the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II and other prominent traditional leaders from across the country to mediate between the two chiefs.
