The Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Volta Region, Mawutor Agbavitor, has criticised Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), accusing him of presenting “pseudo-promises” that lack actionable follow-through.

During a press conference, Mr Agbavitor contrasted the NDC’s development plan with what he described as the NPP’s neglect of the region’s urgent needs.

“A Tour of Deception”

“Today, we gather to expose the deception behind Dr. Bawumia's tour, which was nothing more than a series of hollow pledges,” he asserted.

He argued that Bawumia’s visit failed to deliver any concrete initiatives, ultimately falling short of addressing the Volta Region’s pressing needs.

Mr Agbavitor presented former President John Dramani Mahama’s work as a model of purposeful leadership, highlighting Mahama’s sustainable vision for the region.

Mahama’s Vision vs. Bawumia’s Promises

Agbavitor emphasized key projects spearheaded by Mahama, including the revitalization of the Juapong Textiles Factory, development of University of Health and Allied Sciences satellite campuses in Keta and Battor, and significant infrastructure projects such as the Keta-Denu-Ho and Eastern Corridor roads. “These are not empty promises; they are actionable projects aimed at transforming lives,” he emphasized.

In contrast, he criticized Bawumia’s mention of a sea defense wall in Ketu South, pointing out its absence from the NPP’s official manifesto. “If this was a genuine commitment, it would be a priority. Instead, Dr. Bawumia has left our coastal communities unprotected, just as he abandoned the victims of tidal waves,” Agbavitor said, challenging the NPP’s dedication to those affected by natural disasters.

Accusations of Indifference and Neglect

Agbavitor pointed to what he described as Bawumia’s indifference toward the Volta Region. “He has never visited tidal wave victims, instead prioritizing delegate meetings over addressing the suffering of our people,” he noted. Agbavitor also referenced controversial remarks from Bawumia’s running mate, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, who previously threatened to protest government aid for these victims, calling the statement disrespectful and questioning Bawumia’s sincerity.

Unfulfilled Promises at Juapong Textiles

Turning to the Juapong Textile Factory, Agbavitor questioned Bawumia’s economic strategy for the region. “Is there any NPP commitment to Juapong? As chairman of the economic management team, what has Dr. Bawumia done for our industry?” he asked. He also cited the lack of resettlement for communities affected by the Akosombo Dam spillage, adding, “Thirteen months have passed with no solutions. This is the NPP’s track record.”

Infrastructure Delays and Broken Commitments

Agbavitor highlighted the deteriorating state of the Ho-Tokor road, which was initially awarded to AMANDI Construction under Mahama’s administration in 2016. “It’s surprising that Bawumia still mentions this road in 2024, a project they promised in 2019 but have since allowed to deteriorate,” he said, casting doubt on the credibility of the NPP’s commitments after years of inaction.

Allegations of Manufactured Support

The NDC chairman questioned the authenticity of the crowds at Bawumia’s events, alleging that attendees were bussed in from other areas with promises of food and money. “In Keta, some attendees were even given rotten tomatoes—an insulting gesture that epitomizes the NPP’s contempt for our people,” Agbavitor claimed.

Selective Praise and Misrepresentation

Agbavitor addressed selective endorsements Bawumia received from certain chiefs, asserting they did not reflect the region’s overall sentiment. “Togbui Acolatse V’s known affiliation with the NPP doesn’t represent the people of Keta, who are aware of which leaders truly prioritize their interests,” he said. He also cited a pastor who later retracted his support for Bawumia, clarifying that his remarks were made under pressure and did not reflect the views of the broader clergy.

A Call to Trust the NDC

Agbavitor concluded by urging Volta Region residents to support the NDC and to place their trust in Mahama’s vision for a brighter future. “H.E. John Dramani Mahama remains the true hope for our people. His track record speaks for itself, and under his leadership, we will achieve the development we deserve,” he declared.

The press conference delivered a clear critique of Bawumia’s tour, portraying the NDC as a committed advocate for the region’s welfare and emphasizing the need for accountable and effective leadership.
