The University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) says Erald Salifu Amoako, son of Rev Salifu Amoako, is currently not fit to be sent to the police station for questioning.
This decision follows an incident in which Erald, while allegedly driving recklessly, caused an accident resulting in the death of two young women earlier this month.
According to a medical report dated October 29, 2024, and signed by Dr. Fred Salawu of UGMC, Erald was first admitted on October 12, 2024, after being referred from Legon Hospital.
He reportedly suffered significant injuries, including an open right ankle dislocation and facial lacerations.
The report reveals that Erald experienced a brief loss of consciousness and was subsequently managed by a team of plastic and orthopedic surgeons.
Dr. Salawu detailed the surgeries and medical interventions that Erald had undergone.
“He had debridement, spanning right ankle external fixation, and a flap cover on 14 October 2024. Findings at surgery showed an open right ankle joint dislocation with an unstable joint (Gastillo III B) and a tear of the anterior and posterior talofibular and calcaneofibular ligaments,” the report read.
It was also revealed that Erald required additional surgery on October 21, during which split skin grafting was performed to treat a post-traumatic ulcer.
According to the report, he is currently mobilising with no weight on his right leg and was discharged on October 28, 2024, for outpatient review.
Given his medical condition, the UGMC concluded that he is “currently not fit to be sent to the police station for interrogation.”
Dr. Salawu assured that once Erald’s treatment is complete, authorities would be informed accordingly.
This development has sparked anger and concerns from the families of the deceased victims. They fear that the hospital’s declaration may serve as a deliberate attempt to impede the police’s efforts to bring justice to their loved ones.
“We are not asking for much—just accountability for the lives lost,” a relative of one of the victims stated on condition of anonymity. “If the suspect can be discharged from the hospital, why can’t he be interrogated? It feels like they are tying the hands of the police.”
The police are yet to comment on the medical report and its implications for their investigation. However, family members are calling for transparency and fairness as they seek justice for the victims.
Background
The accident occurred earlier this month when Erald Salifu Amoako was reportedly driving at a high speed in Accra. The collision resulted in the immediate death of two young women, leading to calls for a thorough investigation and prosecution of those involved.
The UGMC’s decision to declare Erald unfit for questioning has become a point of contention, and the public awaits further developments in the case.
