The Ministry of Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs has appointed Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, along with other prominent chiefs, to mediate the Bawku chieftaincy conflict in the Upper East Region.
Chieftaincy Minister Stephen Asamoah Boateng stated that this move is strategic in addressing the longstanding dispute in the area.
He added that security agencies are actively managing the situation, while the mediation delegation is also prepared to facilitate discussions between the two traditional leaders vying for the Bawku throne.
Mr Asamoah Boateng also cautioned the local population not to politicize the situation.
JoyNews' Upper East Regional correspondent, Albert Sore noted that Bawku town is currently under a heavy security presence due to heightened tensions in the community.
“There is still a very high-security presence in the town, which is helping to keep things under control.” However, he added, “The residents themselves still do not feel safe, and many are staying indoors for their own safety.” He said on Tuesday, October 28, 2024.
The Bawku chieftaincy conflict recently flared up again after a period of relative calm in the area.
This resurgence followed the return of a rival chief, Alhaji Seidu, after he had been exiled for some time.
The recent violence has resulted in the loss of eight lives, while hundreds of lives and properties have been lost to the conflict over the years. The area is currently under a curfew.
