President Nana Akufo-Addo has extended his congratulations to Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, on her election as Commonwealth Secretary-General.

In a Facebook post on Saturday, October 26, President Akufo-Addo highlighted Botchwey’s commitment to inclusivity and progress, qualities he believes will shape her tenure within the Commonwealth.

President Akufo-Addo expressed his gratitude to his fellow Commonwealth leaders, who endorsed Botchwey’s candidacy, ensuring her election during the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) held in Apia, Samoa.

He acknowledged the crucial role of this support in achieving such a significant appointment and emphasised that her success reflects positively on Ghana’s standing on the international stage.

Madam Botchwey was elected as Secretary-General on Friday, October 25, after a competitive selection process involving candidates from across the Commonwealth.

Her appointment marks a notable achievement, as she becomes one of the few African leaders to hold the esteemed position.

Known for her progressive approach to diplomacy and governance, Botchwey brings over two decades of experience, including her recent impactful work as Ghana’s Foreign Minister.

As she prepares to assume her role, Botchwey is expected to prioritize issues of unity, equitable development, and cooperation within the Commonwealth’s diverse member states.

President Akufo-Addo’s remarks emphasised that she carries with her a vision of inclusivity and forward-thinking strategies, which he believes will be instrumental in strengthening Commonwealth partnerships.

"Today, I feel a deep sense of pride and joy in congratulating Hon. Shirley Ayorkor Botchway on her election as the next and 7th Secretary-General of the Commonwealth. As the first Ghanaian to hold this position, her selection speaks to the strength of her character and her dedication to service, as well as to the esteem in which our nation, Ghana, is held amongst her peers."

"For years, I have watched her serve Ghana, Africa and the international community with unshakeable commitment and grace. Her work as Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration is a testament to her devotion to bridging divides and building meaningful partnerships."

"She carries with her a vision of inclusivity and progress that I know will inspire the Commonwealth family, and guide it towards a future of hope and unity," an excerpt of the President's post said.
