TikTok should be regulated – Akua Amoakowaa

CEO of Groupe Jay N Jay and former Ghana's Most Beautiful queen, Akua Amoakowaa has expressed concern over the rise of cyberbullying and explicit content on TikTok.

Speaking on 'The Career Trail' program on Joy Learning TV and Joy News, she emphasized the need for regulation to protect users.

As a mother, Akua takes a firm stance on safeguarding her children from TikTok's harmful influences. "My kids don't have phones because of TikTok," she revealed.

The CEO condemned the increasing insults on TikTok, particularly youngsters targeting elderly individuals.

She also criticized the proliferation of nudity on the platform, attributing these issues to youngsters seeking stardom and fame without considering consequences.

“I know most young people want to be stars, you want to be celebrities, and you call yourselves celebrities on Tiktok. But what are you doing that you think you deserve to be celebrated that you are calling yourself a celebrity. It’s not about attaining the celebrity status. The most important thing is how you get there or what you do to attain that status”, she said.

She advised youngsters to focus on creating quality content that earns them a decent income.

‘’You should have money in your pocket when you are popular. You insult people and you become popular, and at the end of the day you sit in trotro; so what have you achieved? Zero, nothing,’’ she emphasized.

Akua cautioned that frequent online insults can render individuals unappealing to potential partners and brands.

She encouraged youngsters to rethink their strategy, recognizing that positive content can equally propel them to fame.

Citing Teacher Blessing, an educative content creator, as a positive example, Akua encouraged youngsters to produce valuable content.

"People are using the internet for profitable things. Let’s change the kind of content we put on social media, on TikTok most especially. Let’s put content that would want people to associate with you. I saw Teacher Blessing coming. And now the kind of following she has amass for herself, it’s crazy. And she is doing something wonderful," she reiterated.

Amoakowaa concluded by urging youngsters to reassess their content strategy, focusing on educational material and responsible social media usage.
