Former General Secretary of the NPP, Kwabena Agyei Agyapong, has commended Vice President and NPP Presidential Candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, as a leader of exceptional integrity, asserting that he is the type of leader Ghana needs today.
Kwabena Agyapong, one of the ten candidates who contested with Dr. Bawumia for the NPP Flagbearer position, has since the election pledged his support for the Vice President, joining him on his campaign across the country.
Speaking to the chiefs and people of Adaklu in the Volta Region on Tuesday, Agyapong praised Dr. Bawumia’s character and integrity after holding the office of Vice President for eight years.
“This is a man with strong personal integrity. He has served as Vice President for eight years, and no one has found a blemish on his record. That says a lot about his character,” Agyapong stated.
“He understands people, he loves people, and he cares for people. I truly believe he is the kind of leader Ghanaians need."
Agyapong added that after years of propaganda labeling the NPP as an Akan-dominated party, Bawumia’s election as the first Muslim to lead a major political party in Ghana for a presidential election has marked a transformative moment.
“His election as NPP Flagbearer has laid to rest the perception of the NPP as an Akan party,” Agyapong noted, emphasizing the historic nature of Bawumia’s victory, including the significant number of votes he received.
“Many people did not expect him to win so resoundingly. There were ten of us in the race, but he made history by winning with 61% — a record for a first-time aspirant in our party’s history. Neither Adu Boahene, Kufuor, nor Nana Akufo-Addo achieved 61% on their first attempt. Dr. Bawumia did."
Agyapong further highlighted Bawumia’s broad appeal beyond party lines.
“Bawumia has widespread support across the nation. He is a candidate embraced by Christians, Muslims, and traditionalists alike. Wherever he goes, he shows respect and commands respect in return.”
