Man United needs to avoid more injuries – Ten Hag

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag says his squad cannot afford to suffer many more injuries.

United face Fenerbahce in the Europa League on Thursday without 10 members of their first-team squad.

Skipper Bruno Fernandes is ruled out through suspension, while veteran defender Jonny Evans is now sidelined after suffering a problem in Saturday’s win against Brentford.

Long-term absentees Mason Mount, Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia are still out, and while £52m defender Leny Yoro has returned to outdoor training it might be some weeks before he can make his debut.

It is a worryingly familiar situation to last season when United found themselves stretched in a way they hoped to avoid this term.

"Hopefully we won't get any more injuries, otherwise we will be short," said Ten Hag.

The United boss said Mount was taking "a little longer than expected" to return to action.

He has missed three games since suffering a blow to the head in the home defeat by Tottenham on 29 September, although the precise reason for his absence has not been revealed.

Shaw and Malacia are continuing their return to fitness after injury absences that now extend to eight and 17 months respectively.

"It is never easy but we have to deal with it and we will deal with it," said Ten Hag.

"We have to cover many games in a short time and we will do that the best as possible. Players like to play football so as long as you have enough players available to construct a team, it's best to play."

United have taken two points from their opening two Europa League games, following draws with FC Twente and Porto.
