Ecuador suspends recognition of ‘SADR’

The Republic of Ecuador has suspended its recognition of the so-called Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR), a separatist entity it first acknowledged in 1983, followed by the establishment of an embassy in 2009.

Ecuador’s Foreign Minister, Gabriela Sommerfeld, informed her Moroccan counterpart, Nasser Bourita, of the decision during a phone call.

She also confirmed that a formal notification had been sent to the separatist representation in Quito.

This move aligns with the efforts led by His Majesty King Mohammed VI in recent years to assert Moroccan sovereignty over the Sahara, with the Autonomy Plan as the sole framework for resolving the regional dispute.

Ecuador’s suspension of recognition marks a new chapter in its relations with the Kingdom of Morocco.
