Parliament has firmly refuted claims that Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has held a meeting with President Akufo-Addo to negotiate a settlement regarding the status of four parliamentary seats declared vacant.
In a statement issued by the parliamentary administration, officials described the reports as “false” and “misleading,” urging the public to ignore the claims.
The controversy was fueled by a video shared online, which purported to show the Speaker meeting with the President after his pronouncement on October 17, 2024, regarding the Minority’s call to vacate four seats in Parliament.
The seats are Fomena, Amenfi Central, Suhum, and Agona West parliamentary seats. But the ruling has been stayed by the Supreme Court.
However, Parliament clarified that the video in question was taken months earlier, on July 4, 2024, when the Speaker led a delegation to present the maiden Democracy Cup to the President at Jubilee House.
The statement described the attempt to falsely label the footage as a recent event as “disingenuous” and “unfortunate.”
“This is an attempt to twist facts and impugn the integrity of the Rt. Hon. Speaker and Parliament. We categorically state that there is no iota of truth in the insinuations,” the statement read.
Parliament, therefore, urged the public to treat the viral video and its narrative with the contempt it deserves.
“The general public is hereby advised to ignore the attempt to hoodwink them into believing what has never transpired and treat the narrative with the contempt it deserves.”
